Lounge Guidelines

  • Try to arrive a few minutes early to calm and center yourself. It is important that all students are present for the Sun Salutations at the beginning of every class. These help to prepare the mind and body for the experience of yoga, thereby ensuring a safe and effective practice.

  • If you are new to our studio and/or to Ashtanga yoga, please read the class descriptions before coming to your first class. Be sure that the class you have chosen to attend is appropriate for your level of practice. If you are unsure of the class that is best for you, please ask an instructor.

  • Let your teacher know if you are pregnant or have injuries or conditions that might affect your practice. If you are injured or tired, skip poses you can’t do or shouldn’t do, or try a modified version.

  • Please don’t wear perfume or cologne in class. The hot and humid atmosphere in the room intensifies the scent many times.

  • Since the studio is warm and humid, be sure not to overdress. A t-shirt or tank top and shorts are recommended. Also, if you need a towel during your practice remember to bring one.

  • It is not recommended that you drink any water during your practice. The body is trying to maintain heat through breath and bandhas, cold water cools the body and the kidneys have to start working. Your energy should be conserved for the practice.

  • It is not recommended that you eat before practice. You may have a light snack a couple of hours before, but it is best for the body to not be digesting while you are practicing. It takes energy to digest food and it may make the body lethargic. It can also make certain postures uncomfortable.

  • Remember to listen to your body. It is better to allow the body to open slowly than to push yourself too far, too quickly. Try to be content with where you are and patient with your practice.
